The whole bridge in elevation, from the 3D model: a slender arch spanning the valley with the deck on piers above it.

A 204 m deck arch bridge across a deep valley in Madeira: a fixed concrete arch carrying a prestressed deck. Designed, never built.

I designed this bridge for my master’s thesis at Instituto Superior Técnico. It would connect Rochinha and Alto da Pena, across a deep valley in Funchal. The site is theoretical, and the bridge was never built.

A fixed reinforced concrete arch spans 162 m. It carries a voided-slab deck in prestressed concrete, 204 m long, on two lateral spans of 21 m and six interior spans of 27 m. The design follows the Eurocodes, including a linear dynamic seismic analysis. It covers the superstructure only; foundations and abutments were outside its scope.

The interactive model is built from the thesis drawings. It steps through a construction sequence and shows the prestressing and the reinforcement section by section. Where an element is my own proposal and not something read from the drawings, the model says so.
